The After School Academy was introduced in March 2002 for adolescent boys in grades 7—12. This age group in particular faces many obstacles on their pathway to manhood. The Academy addresses these needs in a comprehensive and holistic way. Sequenced in an age-appropriate manner, the Academy provides academic enrichment, character and leadership development, wilderness training, internship placement and college preparation. The Academy is based on the latest research and models of best practices, which resulted from the Adolescent Task Force BCNY initiated in 2001 that visited 42 other youth development programs in the greater New York area. The Academy will grow each year so that by 2007, it will serve 270 members agency-wide.
