Patricio Landeta didn't expect to be a nationally recognized chess player a year ago when he was introduced to the game at the Harriman Clubhouse.
Today, twelve-year-old Patricio is in his seventh year as a member of The Boys’ Club and is known for making the most of his time. He is a part of the winning Harriman Hawks Swim Team, a stand out student within our Media Department and a member of the Game Room Association. Most recently, his achievements within our Music Department have earned him a piano scholarship to the renowned Third Street School of Music.
Last year while Patricio was in the Junior game room, he decided to try his hand at chess. After much practice, he took his knowledge of the game to the East Side Community Middle and High School (ESCMHS), where he secured a spot on the school’s chess team. From there, his team entered and won several city-wide championships and qualified for the USCF National Championship in Nashville, Tennessee. Patricio was one of 12 boys selected to compete on behalf of his school against the nation’s best middle and high school chess teams, including the long-standing NYC champion, PS 318.
In the end, ESCMHS clenched the victory and brought home the championship title. It was the first time in the school’s history that they had a team compete, let alone win the tournament.

Congratulations, Patricio! The Boys' Club of New York is proud to call you one of our own.
