Abbe Explorers and Juniors Gain New Roots

This past November, eleven environmentally conscious BCNY boys teamed up with arborists from Queens Botanical Garden and MillionTreesNYC to adopt 14 trees in Flushing, NY.

As a part of Marion McMahon Abbe Clubhouse’s year-long stewardship with MillionTreesNYC, Susan Lacerte, the Executive Director of Queens Botanical Garden, visited the boys and shared the importance of maintaining a natural environment in an urban setting.  In addition to the boy’s adoption of the 14 trees, the Abbe Juniors attended a tree-care workshop where they were taught how to properly water and care for the plants while keeping the surrounding soil debris-free.

The workshop was graciously instructed by Gina Baldwin, Project Manager NYC Compost Project in Queens with the Queens Botanical Garden, and Jennifer Kline, Project Coordinator NYC Compost Project in Queens with the Queens Botanical Garden along with Neil Barrett, a Civic Corps Volunteer.

At the end of the workshop the Juniors were joined by fellow Abbe Explorers who helped plant daffodil bulbs, which will bloom in the spring.  The boys will also be placing a small sign in front of the trees and flowers proudly announcing the Clubhouse's tree adoption and care.
