The BCNY Lions Rugby team from the Gerry Clubhouse finished their season undefeated with a victory this past weekend in the Harlem (Flag) Rugby Cup.
The tournament showcased the talents of five Harlem elementary teams, all were competing for the coveted Champion Cup. Parents, siblings and volunteers packed the gym at Edward A. Reynolds West Side High School for the final showdown between the Gerry Clubhouse Lions and PS 208A. In a real '‘nail-biter,’' the boys from the Gerry Clubhouse came out triumphant, with a 4-3 win.
This fall, through a partnership with PlayRugby USA, The Boys' Club of New York's Physical Department was introduced to rugby. Members in all three clubhouses were taught technique, skill and style of the internationally played sport. PlayRugby’s core philosophy is structured in youth development with an initiative to “combine after school coaching and instruction with community-wide competitions to develop and reinforce youth character, conditioning, community and academic commitment.”
We look forward to increased participation in 2012 and continuing our partnership with PlayRugby USA. Together, we will tackle the alarming statistics of obesity and delinquency in urban areas, “one pass at a time.”
