DES: Admissions

All 5th to 9th grade boys who are members of BCNY are eligible to participate in the ISP program. To become a member of BCNY, please contact your local clubhouse. Upon becoming a BCNY member, interested ISP candidates should contact the DES to set up an introductory meeting to discuss BCNY guidelines, independent school placement requirements, and other opportunities.

DES Admissions

Application Process

The Department of Educational Services (DES) helps its students through every stage of the application process. Acceptance in a school does not automatically guarantee a placement or scholarship.

Boys are evaluated based on their character, personality, extracurricular activities, and academic capabilities. BCNY places approximately 60 boys every year into independent boarding and day schools.

Stage1: Enrollment to the ISP Program
Stage 2: Completion of the Application
Stage 3: Visits and Interviews with Schools for placement and scholarship

Cost

There are no fees required to apply to the program.

You’ve been accepted…now what?

Once a student has been accepted, DES helps him and his family to decide on which school is the best fit for him. During this stage, any additional paperwork required by the school must be completed and submitted.

Summer Prep Program

To prepare future students for life in an independent day or boarding school, DES offers an intensive preparatory session during the summer prior to their enrollment. The Summer PREP program is a series of workshops whose goals are to help students transition comfortably to their new independent school environment. Selected topics include:  study skills, peer relationships, time management, hygiene, school discipline, honor codes and administrative hierarchy in an independent school setting

Application Stages

Stage1: Enrollment to the ISP Program

Application to the ISP program begins in the fall of every year. BCNY administers the Education Records Bureau (ERB) test to boys in Grades 5 to 7 and the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) to boys in Grades 8 to 11. Between 300 and 400 boys take these exams in BCNY clubhouses, which are official testing sites. About 80-100 boys are selected for the ISP program.

Test dates: Testing typically occurs in October every year. Please contact the DES at (212) 677-1108 x 1153 for exact dates.

The application process for admission to the ISP Program includes ERB test score results, school transcripts, recommendations and staff interviews. Once accepted, each member meets with DES staff to discuss their schools of interest and academic pursuits, their needs and concerns.

Stage 2: Completion of the Application

We speak directly with the admissions department at schools and other administrative personnel to ensure that our boys have the best possible chance of acceptance. A prospective student typically applies to five schools. BCNY works with the schools to waive any application fee and a common application form is used.

Stage 3: Visits and Interviews with Schools for placement and scholarship

Interviews with schools take place from December through February. The staff works closely with boys and their families to prepare for these interviews. Whenever possible, boys are encouraged to visit school open-houses to get a better feel for the conditions and opportunities that make each school so special.

I look back to when we first started the paperwork for Melhsann and I recall the many obstacles placed before us. We were able to weather the storm and that led to such a worthwhile outcome. I am so pleased that Melsann is a part of the St. Marks Family. Coach Lubick is a gem and has always been upfront and honest in his communication with me. I am looking forward to the potentially rewarding future made possible by the Boys Club of New York. Thank you!
