READ, one of many educational opportunities offered by The Boys' Club of New York’s Department of Educational Advancement, is a program committed to the study of reading and writing and the nurturing of character and community. READ focuses on the development, refinement and reinforcement of literacy skills and strategies, and also hopes to create an environment that fosters the growth of self confidence, instills the joy of learning, and develops leadership skills, preparing members for full participation in a diverse and changing world.

What is READ?

BCNY is proud to sponsor the READ Program, which has as its goal the development, enrichment and refinement of basic reading and writing skills of its members. In each clubhouse READ offers boys in second through fourth grade, a five-week Summer Institute and three five-week after-school sessions which are scheduled for the winter and spring cycles.

The program follows a “Well Balanced Approach to Reading and Writing”. READ's literacy curriculum has a strong “read aloud component”, followed by a workshop approach to reading, which includes: both guided and independent reading activities; mini lessons which aim at the development and reinforcement of reading strategies—encouraging the development of fluent and independent readers. With a ratio of 6 to 1, READ staff is able to effectively support children who demonstrate difficulties with reading and literacy, in addition to challenging students are excel in literacy. Blending reading and writing, READ expands and enhances members' writing skills through the exploration of important skills and various genres.

It is our hope that READ will empower our boys, to excel, and become not only lifetime readers and learners, but also productive members of our society.

The READ Partnership

Parents are faced with a great deal of responsibilities—perhaps the greatest is to provide for their children an education that will help them succeed in their adult life. The BCNY understands parent's needs and provides supportive services to help their child's educational growth and development. Regular communication between READ staff and parents is a hallmark of the program. Regular meetings are scheduled to keep parents informed about the program and their sons' progress. BCNY asks for families to commit to completing the full three-year cycle of READ, as well as regular attendance and punctuality at all READ sessions and meetings. In return for this commitment, each participant will receive regular formal and informal assessments of his reading and writing abilities; a small-class environment to meet his academic and social needs; and a supportive and qualified staff, committed to working closely with him and his families to enrich his literacy ability.

READ: A Well-Balanced Program

The READ Program is organized into school-year cycles (winter and spring) and the Summer Institute, each of which are 5 weeks long. The Summer Institute includes morning sessions which meet 4 times per week. The school-year cycles meet 3 times per week, after-school from 4pm – 6pm.

  • January 14 – February 14

As to guarantee a well-rounded after-school experience, READ is structured in this manner as to allow our members to continue participate in the recreational and athletic activities offered at the clubhouses.

Moving Beyond READ

It is the goal of the READ Program to provide a solid foundation for our members' educational journey. This journey does not end at the end of 5th grade, but continues with the Robert M. Gardiner School (formerly known as Camp Cromwell School ), for which READ students receive priority in the admission process, Independent School Placement, and our After School Academy. By attending READ, BCNY members have the opportunity to receive the academic and social support necessary for success from 2nd Grade through high school graduation and college admissions.
