PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES

Starry Nights in Martinsville : The CCS Astronomy Program

Collaborating with the Somerset County 4-H, CCS offers every student Starry Nights: The Astronomy Program. The program will consist of 18 classes, followed by, weather permitting, night sky observations. Each student participates in the program 3 times during the summer. The classes are taught by astronomy hobbyists who live in the area. During the third week of Camp, Rose Science of the Museum of Natural History will hopefully be sending their Moveable Museum : "Discovering the Universe” to Camp Cromwell School to enhance the astronomy program.

Robert M. Gardiner School Presents…

Over the past years, Wednesday nights were known as Movie Night, as the student body viewed a popular movie in the dining hall. This program was established in order to provide the Teacher Counselors with much needed time off. The program had many shortcomings and ultimately was only partially successful, adding nothing special or unique to the program. This summer, Movie Night will be replaced with Robert M. Gardiner School Presents which will bring special guests or performances to school. Robert M. Gardiner School Presents will greatly enhance the summer program and provide students with exposure to many a variety of ideas and topics. The schedule thus far is as follows:

  • July 13 Dramatic Performance: Mama's Boyz
  • July 20 CCS 20 th Anniversary Celebration
  • July 27 Performer: Chesney Snow—Beat Box and Dramatic Performance and Workshop.
  • August 3 Special Guests: El Teatro of El Puente
  • August 10 Moveable Museum : "Discovering the Universe” of the Hayden Planetarium.

Chess-in-the-Camp

The Gardiner School has paired up with Chess-in-the-Schools, an organization that brings chess instruction into public schools, to develop a chess exposure program. Chess-in-the-Schools brings three young chess masters to work as Teacher Counselors and chess instructors. Their enthusiasm for chess and working with BCNY members makes the program a tremendous hit. Students develop their skills and a love of chess. The program culminates in a school-wide tournament in which the majority of the students participate.

Conflict Resolution

As boys enter early adolescence, they frequently find themselves at odds with their parents, teachers and peers. Often, these conflicts instigate negative and sometimes destructive behavior—and might account for the greatest barrier for achieving success among BCNY membership. Conflict resolution programs are designed to empower students to prevent, manage, and peacefully settle conflict through the development of analytic and creative thinking and effective communication skills. Students learn means to recognize and manage their feelings of anger and aggression which often inhibit their ability to communicate and make decisions effectively.
