As we continue to empower our members, families, and communities, it’s important that we highlight the Changemakers who go above and beyond their work and responsibilities to ensure members are Competent, Confident, Connected, and Character-Rich.
MEET OTHA CALDWELL
Otha Caldwell is the Gerry Clubhouse Teen Director who uses his passion for cooking and love of the outdoors to engage club members. We caught up with him to learn more about his career, interests, and favorite BCNY moments…
What made you want to join BCNY?
I was introduced to the program by Chief Program Officer Carlos Velazquez. He brought me in for a tour of the Gerry Clubhouse and I fell in love with the program. I was excited about being able to work with the young men and provide direct service.
What would you say is a highlight of your career?
My mother always told me when you find something you love you’ll never work a day in your life. The highlight for me has been working with the members and seeing the impact I have on their lives. Now that I’ve had so many amazing experiences working with youth, I would love to focus on ways to engage more parents in our program.
Can you give us one moment with a member that inspired you to provide BCNY members with
On a camping trip one of the members saw one of the lakes and shared, “Mr. O look at this. This is beautiful. I can wake up to this every day,” and that made my whole trip! I was exposed to nature as a teen volunteer for NYC Parks. I love seeing the club members discover the beauty of nature the same way I did when I was their age.
What’s your favorite indoor/outdoor activity?
My favorite indoor activity is cooking; it’s very therapeutic for me. I love cooking and second to that is art. When I’m not able to draw or create something I take my art experience to the kitchen to make beautiful, healthy dishes that people enjoy. I love hiking, climbing, birdwatching, and doing anything outdoors.
