Meet Jariel

A Day in the Life at BCNY

Meet Jariel

Jariel R. is a Boys’ Club boy through and through. He takes the BCNY van from his middle school on 120th Street to the Gerry Clubhouse. He is there five days a week, until 7:30p every night. He gets upset when his sister Jasmin picks him up early.

“His passion is being able to experience new things. From pick up to program to after program, he’s a part of everything,” remarked Terrance Taylor, Gerry Clubhouse Youth Director.

Jariel plays basketball, soccer and baseball. He gets homework help and tutoring when needed. He learned to swim at BCNY. He loves music production where he is writing and recording his own raps. He takes part in Youth Council and ping-pong is his favorite game room activity.

Terrence noted, “Jariel sees the opportunities that are in front of him and he makes the most of it. That’s really all we want our young people to know, is that you have options, you have choices, you can make change and you can really impact your life.”

Jariel isn’t the only one in his family to recognize the opportunities at BCNY – his sister Jasmin is participating in BCNY’s Project Lifeguard: American Red Cross Lifeguarding program.

BCNY has been able to open its doors to young women like Jasmin through Saturday Night Lights (SNL), an initiative made possible in partnership with the Manhattan DA’s Office. SNL provides BCNY members and non-members alike a safe, fun, and productive place to hang out on Friday and Saturday evenings. The program’s mission is to engage East Harlem youth through basketball and improve academic performance by empowering participants to develop the skills, knowledge, and meaningful relationships necessary to reach their fullest potential.

We’ve now extended the program to include Ladies Only Basketball on Saturday afternoons and Monday nights thanks to the hard work of SNL Coordinator Raeven King, and now on Mondays we also offer the young women participating in SNL the opportunity to earn their American Red Cross certification as lifeguards during Ladies Only Project Lifeguard.
